1 Day Cob Oven Workshop on Saturday August 15, 2015

You can build!  ExploApril 2012 (Kimberton, Cob oven) 127re the ancient art of building with clay, sand and straw.  Learn the skills necessary to build your own cob oven in your backyard.  Cob or earth ovens are a fantastic way to cook rustic, authentic, wood fired pizzas.  It can also be used to bake breads and other goods, stews, roasts, vegetables and more.  The materials are non-toxic and taken from local and renewable resources.  Oven building can be a muddy, fun, artistic, community building event.  We will have theory and hands on leaning, while we build an actual oven.  We already have a base for the oven made and we will explain how to create one for your self, that is cheap and insulating.  We will discuss different soil types and materials that can be used for each of the layers to make it super efficient.  We will also cover how to build fires and use the oven.

Instructors:

Andy Sahn, Spiral Ridge Permaculture Instructor Andy Sahnhas devoted his life to the field of sustainable development in construction, agriculture, and ecological design. Beginning in Israel at Ecovillage Kibbutz Lotan, Andy received a premier education in sustainable agriculture, natural building, ecological design & social justice, and earned his Permaculture Design Certificate.
Inspired and reborn with a new sense of awareness, he continued on traveling across the U.S. learning & developing his skills. In 2011, Andy apprenticed at the North American School of Natural Building, in Coquille, OR,  where he studied with builder, philosopher, inventor, Ianto Evans. He then went on to work with many other natural builders and has taught workshops in Austin, Tx, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, and Mexico. Andy’s passion to educate people about the ease of building with earth and the wealth of other local, minimally processed materials, has helped empower many others interested starting in their own projects.  He is the owner/creator of Earthen Home Designs in Nashville.

Spiral Ridge Permaculture Teacher Cliff Davis

Cliff Davis  has vast experience in the fields of permaculture, food forestry, organics, appropriate technology, natural building, deep nature connection and regenerative agriculture, that allow him to offer an integrative approach to land and culture repair. Cliff first became involved in natural building in 2004 when he helped build a cob shed with Christina Ott of Barefoot Builder.  He went on to study other forms of natural building, eventually teaching courses and working as a freelance natural builder.  He has 11 years of direct experience with a variety of methods, including, timber framing, earthen ovens, cob, strawbale, thatch, cordwood, straw/clay slip, earthbag, natural plasters, living roofs, organic round pole framing and more.  He is co-owner of Spiral Ridge Permaculture and New Agrarian Design.

This course is being held at The Farm School.  Lunch is on your own and we will suggest places in the area or you can bring your own.
